Gather up what you’ll need to make this Classic Horseradish Dip & Spread…

Classic Horseradish Dip & Spread

  • Crème fraîche – Crème fraîche is a French cultured cream that is thick, rich & tangy, with a high butterfat content. Sour cream is a good alternative as long as it is the full-fat version.
  • Mayonnaise Highest quality mayonnaise is best used here. To avoid seed oils & bioengineered ingredients, I use Chosen Foods Classic Mayo made with avocado oil. It is usually available at most stores or, if necessary, online at Amazon.
  • Prepared horseradish – Drained to remove excess moisture. Prepared horseradish is a spicy condiment made from grated horseradish root, vinegar, and salt. Do not substitute with creamy horseradish sauce, which is a milder, creamier version often made with prepared horseradish along with ingredients like sour cream or mayonnaise.
  • Dijon mustard – Dijon is preferred over regular mustard for its more intense complex flavor profile. Adds acidity and brightness to the dish.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Worcestershire sauce is a fermented liquid condiment known for its complex, savory, and tangy flavor. It’s a made with a base of vinegar and flavored with ingredients like anchovies, molasses, tamarind, onion, garlic, and various spices.
  • Distilled white vinegar – Adds tartness to offset the richness of the sauce.
  • Salt & freshly ground black pepper – To taste.
  • Fresh chives – Finely chopped. Sprinkled on top just before serving for the addition of color, flavor & texture. Always preferred over the dried version.

  • Add the crème fraîche, mayonnaise, horseradish, mustard, Worcestershire & vinegar to a medium-size bowl.

Although I usually recommend fresh produce, I always use prepared horseradish here. My go-to is Kelchner’s Horse-Radish, found in the refrigerated case usually in or near the seafood area. It’s finely grated then bottled with a dash of vinegar and salt. So convenient and packed with flavor.

Before adding it to the mix, drain off any excess moisture to ensure that your sauce doesn’t lose its creaminess. If you prefer, feel free to grab some fresh horseradish root and grate it by hand.
